Nordic Walking
What is Nordic Walking ?
A group of international Finnish cross country skiers decided to train during the summer, using their cross country ski poles. Aerobic tests at the end of this period produced staggering results - they were fitter than at any previous stage in their training ! A two year study followed, resulting in the redesign of the poles specific to walking, and the new sport of Nordic Walking was born.
Why bother with Nordic Walking poles ?
The lightweight poles used in Nordic Walking get you using your upper body. This leads to a more efficient walking style, and takes the stresses off your lower body, particularly the knees and ankles. As more of the body muscle groups are being exercised, this leads to improved cardio-vascular function, with better aerobic exercise benefits than conventional walking. You walk quicker, but it doesn't feel as tough !
Is it just older age groups that benefit from Nordic Walking ?
Absolutely no ! Nordic Walking offers health benefits for all ages. Even runners would benefit from the cross training effect of Nordic Walking. If you are returning back from injury, for example, there is nothing better to build strength back up in muscle and ligament groups, without the hard impact of running.
Where can I try Nordic Walking ?
There are qualified Nordic Walking instructors around the country, who can guide you through the simple initial stages, and get you on the move. Nordic Walking groups are being set up all the time, and there are now events too, where Nordic Walkers can take part alongside non competitive runners.
